Southwest Airlines adds to its schedule of Hawai’i flights, some starting earlier than originally planned. It’s all to ramp up competition with rival Hawaiian Airlines.
The airline will start a new daily service between Sacramento (SMF), California, and Maui (OGG) March 7, 2020. In addition, Southwest will start flying several other previously announced flights on the same day, such as Oakland (OAK), California, to Kauai (LIH); Oakland to Hawai’i’s Big Island (KOA), and San Jose (SJC), California, to Kauai and the Big Island.
The airline’s vice president of network planning Adam Decaire said Southwest will start its Sacramento–Honolulu (HNL) and inland Honolulu–Kauai routes Nov. 10, rather than January 2020, due to strong customer demand.
The airline’s new flights between Oakland and San Jose and the Big Island, and between Oakland and San Jose and Kauai will still begin in late January as originally scheduled.
