Southwest Airlines Leaves Classic In-Flight Snack Behind

A classic snack was served for the last time on Southwest Airlines last week. Aug. 1 marked the first time in the airline’s history it did not serve peanuts.

The move was announced in early July and drew the ire of the National Peanut Board, who said in a statement to CBS News, “We were disappointed to learn about Southwest’s decision to stop serving peanuts, which even the airline considers an iconic part of its history and DNA. It is an unnecessary step that will disappoint many of Southwest’s customers. It is also out of sync with the latest science, which shows education and preparation — such as allowing passengers to pre-board flights to wipe down their seats — do the most to benefit the one percent of Americans with a peanut allergy.”

Southwest Airlines has served complimentary peanuts since the airline’s first flights. The decision to drop peanuts comes from a place of inclusivity and safety for peanut-vulnerable passengers.

“Peanuts forever will be part of Southwest’s history and DNA,” the company said in an emailed statement, as reported by NPR. “However, to ensure the best on-board experience for everyone, especially for customers with peanut-related allergies, we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue serving peanuts on all flights beginning August 1.”

The departure from peanuts leaves passengers with pretzels as the only snack choice on the flight.

Southwest Airlines is the latest to ditch pre-packaged peanuts on flights. Other airlines that stopped serving peanuts include American Airlines and United Airlines. Delta Air Lines will withhold peanuts if a passenger tells crewmembers about sensitivity to the legume.

According to reporting done by NPR, adverse reactions to peanuts result in 150 deaths in the United States each year.
