Bountiful Bourbon

Dec 13, 2014
Daily / Exclusive

Prohibition may have put a cork in the whiskey production of Nashville’s historic Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery, but lovers of fine spirits will be pleased to know that brothers Andy and Charlie Nelson have brought the historic business back to life. Direct descendants of distillery founder Charles Nelson, the brothers have set up shop in Nashville’s Marathon Village — a former automobile factory that’s been retrofitted as creative and commercial space for local artists, performers and craftspeople.

The original distillery founded by the brothers’ great-great-great grandfather was famous for its popularity up until 1909 and Prohibition. Now, small-batch bourbons and whiskeys created from Charles Nelson’s original recipes are once again available.

Décor includes barrel staves arranged in a woven wicker pattern, and an oak-paneled tasting room that allows patrons a view of the gleaming vats and custom crafted copper pot-bellied still. Perfect for a warm-up on a cold winter night: Belle Meade Bourbon, Belle Meade Bourbon Sherry Cask Finish and Nelson’s Green Brier Tennessee White Whiskey. A private event space overlooking the barrel storage area is in the works.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.

One of Hawai’i’s Most Popular (and Controversial) Attractions Being Demolished

If you haven’t actually climbed them, you’ve seen beautiful photos of them at one time or another: Hawai’i’s Stairway to Heaven, located on Oahu. The 3,922-step hike ascends Koolau Mountain Range and has been illegal to hike since 1987. But this has not stopped travelers and locals from doing so, even with a steep fine of $1,000 for trespassing.
