Airline and airport review ranking site Skytrax released its list of last year’s cleanest airlines. Coming out on top, Japan’s All Nippon Airways was named the cleanest airline in the world at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2018.
The ranking of 30 airlines featured mostly Asian airlines such as EVA Air from Taiwan (second place), Asiana Airlines out of South Korea (third place), Singapore Airlines (fourth place), Japan Airlines (fifth place) and Cathay Pacific Airways (sixth place). The top-ranked airlines from other regions include Qatar Airways (seventh place), Swiss International Air Lines (eighth place) and Air New Zealand (20th place).
The list was created based on passenger survey responses regarding the cleanliness of various areas of the aircraft, such as seats, tray tables, carpets, lavatories and overhead bins. According to Travelmath, the dirtiest area of an airplane is the tray table, which can harbor more than 2,100 colony-forming units per square inch.
