With the housing market continuing to change, where people choose to live and buy vacation houses changes, as well. Vacasa, North America’s leading vacation rental management platform, recently released its 2022 Vacation Rental Buyer Report, surveying more than 700 U.S. consumers looking to buy a new vacation rental property.
Here are some key takeaways from this year’s report:
- Young buyers now comprise the majority of vacation rental purchases. Fifty-one percent of today’s vacation rental buyers are millennials and Gen Z. Sixty-nine percent of those are parents and 56 percent are married.
- The majority of short-term rental buyers own their own primary residences, with about one in five of those surveyed buying short term-rentals before owning their first home.
- The top two motivations for vacation rental buyers are to generate a different source of income and to have a family vacation spot.
- Sixty percent of experienced vacation homeowners either work hybrid or are fully remote, meaning they are able to switch it up and work from their vacation home from time to time.
- About 54 percent of buyers look to purchase their rentals in the South, and 52 percent are interested in coastal properties.
- Almost three quarters of buyers stated rest and relaxation is important to them when deciding where and what property to buy.

Apr 17, 2024Amansara Review
It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
