A Singapore Airlines passenger took to Twitter to post what they believed could be a camera on the aircraft’s seatback entertainment system.

A tweet from user Vitaly Kamluk shows three photos from a recent flight on the airline’s Boeing 787. The tweet garnered lots of attention, getting more than 532 re-tweets and 870 likes in the days following the post. Many of the replies are critical of the airline, asking what the apparent cameras are used for.

Singapore Airlines jumped into the conversation to tell users and passengers the sensors were indeed cameras, but there is no programming that uses the technology.

“Hi there, these cameras, which were provided by the original equipment manufacturers, were disabled on our aircraft. We have no plans to enable any features using the cameras,” the airline said on its official Twitter account.

Singapore Airlines is not the only airline to publically admit to having cameras installed on board. According to independent.co.uk, American Airlines and United Airlines also utilize entertainment systems with cameras. A statement from American Airlines said many entertainment systems include some type of camera, even if most are never used.

Singapore Airlines’ entertainment systems are manufactured by Panasonic and Thales.
