Life comes alive in the world’s most populous city proper, and Shanghai delights both business and leisure travelers with that title. An economic, financial and cultural pulse point, the festive and fun city blends old and new seamlessly, with modern skyscrapers towering over traditional sites. Travelers flock to the city to see some of the world’s most popular attractions, including The Bund, City God Temple and Yu Garden.
GETTING THERE
Located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, two major airports serve the East China city of Shanghai: Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport. A metro line connects the two. Bus and taxi service run from both airports into the city. From Shanghai Pudong, travelers can take the high-speed Maglev train to Longyang Road. Departing every 15 minutes before 7:02 p.m. and every 20 minutes thereafter, a single trip costs around $8.
GETTING AROUND
Shanghai boasts the world’s largest public transportation system handling the largest daily volume of passengers. The Shanghai Metro rapid transit includes 11 lines extending to the suburban areas. The metro runs from 5:30 a.m. until midnight daily, and trips range from around 50 cents to $1.75. Taxi service is plentiful throughout the city. Some reputable companies include Da Zhong Taxi, Qiang Sheng Taxi and Jin Jiang Taxi.

M on the Bund
Impress clients at M on the Bund, one of the city’s most exclusive addresses overlooking the iconic Bund. Flavors and dishes cover a worldwide palate with a contemporary spin, and the roof terrace and Crystal Room add to the already warm and sophisticated space.
AFTER 5
Alchemist Cocktail Kitchen
Offering a “unique drinking experience,” there’s no better spot to unwind in Shanghai after a hectic day. While ingredients including Worcestershire sauce, peppercorns and coffee molasses may not typically grace your cocktails, this lounge and its expertly crafted concoctions are sure to spice up your night.
The Jazz Bar at Fairmont Peace Hotel
Located at one of the city’s oldest hotels, The Jazz Bar, open daily until 2 a.m., is the best spot in the city for legendary jazz, with a 1920s décor to match. The Old Jazz Band plays nightly beginning at 7 p.m., with a female vocalist joining in for famous Shanghai tunes from 9:45 p.m.
Kathleen’s Waitan
The popular Kathleen’s 5 on the roof of the Shanghai Art Museum merged with Kathleen’s Waitan in January 2015, doubling the capacity at this Bund location but continuing to serve the cuisine that has made the two restaurants mainstays in the city for the past decade. You can’t go wrong with this favorite, offering great views to boot.
