The Scottish island of Islay, the southernmost of the Inner Hebrides, teems with many distilleries specializing in acclaimed whiskies. One of them, Ardbeg, is now also a hotel and restaurant. In September, Ardbeg opened its intimate hotel to the public, featuring just 12 guestrooms and suites.
Ardbeg House’s accommodations are all different and unique, each celebrating local crafts and the rich history of Islay and Ardbeg. The Monster Room, for instance, features nods to the legend of the Islaygator and the distillery’s own Ardbeg Alligator Whiskey, complete with a sprouting chandelier, vine-wrapped bed and crocodile skin-like wallpaper. The Rebel Room, meanwhile, draws inspiration from the island’s historic sea rebellions through wallpaper reflecting stormy waves and a hand-painted headboard depicting a 12th-century rebellion. Larger accommodations like the Invention Room pay tribute to the distillery’s undying spirit of experimentation, with old laboratory equipment-style décor adorning the space.
Included with stays is a private tour of the distillery, as well as the chance to take part in a special whisky hour ritual at the bar in the evening for a tasting of small-batch whisky.
In addition to the new hotel, Ardbeg also debuted a signature restaurant. Showcasing the best of Islay and Scottish cuisine (with an Ardbeggian twist), this venue offers dishes like hand-dived Islay scallops, Islay crab, Islay Blackface lamb and Ardbeg smoked venison pie.
The Islay Bar and Courtyard is another space for guests and visitors, boasting a spectacular range of malts from Islay and beyond, including exclusive Ardbeg malts. The bar features a selection of wines, beers and cocktails, alongside an all-day casual dining menu. The Courtyard invites visitors and guests to enjoy outdoor seating and, on colder days, its custom-built Ardbeg grill and smoker.
There are many ways to reach Islay from the mainland. Ferries from Glasgow regularly go to the island, and a regional flight via Loganair from Glasgow Airport to Islay (ILY) is also available.

Jul 8, 2026Review: Hartwell House
In the library of Hartwell House, I checked the latest weather forecast on my phone. Most immediately, I made sure we had time for a walk in the 90 acres of gardens before the arrival of thunderstorms. I was also monitoring the next day’s weather, which was expected to break the highest ever June temperature in England. Through my smartphone, I benefited from a science that began, in its modern form, in that very room. There, in 1850, the Royal Meteorological Society was founded.
