Sanctuary Retreats announces the opening of the new Sanctuary Chief’s Camp in Botswana. The flagship property was rebuilt to create a luxurious safari camp with 10 brand-new pavilions and a superb new suite. Sanctuary Chief’s Camp is located on Chief’s Island in the famous Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, known as the “predator capital of Africa,” making it the ultimate safari destination. The pavilions tripled in size, now offering incredible views, a private pool, an outdoor seating area, floor-to-ceiling bathroom windows, an outdoor shower and a large tub. The Geoffrey Kent Luxury Suite can accommodate from two to six guests with two pavilions, a private kitchen, indoor lounge, private boma with a fire pit and a secluded deck area. It is fully staffed with a chef, waiter and housekeeper, as well as a private vehicle with its own guide. “We believe Sanctuary Chief’s Camp now takes the luxury safari experience in Botswana to new levels, with fabulous rooms, a superb location and exceptional service, game viewing and drives,” said Pieter van der Schee, global director sales and marketing, Sanctuary Retreats. “ As with all our camps and lodges in Africa, we have worked with local craftsmen and authorities to minimize the impact on the environment and to offer our guests natural luxury that respects the local surroundings.” The main and public areas received a safari chic décor, with a new bar and library, an extension of the dining room and the addition of a deck and pizza oven. Guests can learn more about the Delta in the orientation room. A new fitness center and Children’s Retreat are also available. A solar farm, one of the largest in Botswana, was built to minimize the impact of the camp on the local environment. Botswana continues to grow in popularity with tourists and this year marks the country’s 50th year of independence. Rates at Sanctuary Chief’s Camp start at $986 per person per night, based on a three-night stay for two inclusive of meals, drinks, game activities, airstrip transfers and park fees.

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
