More travelers take cruises every year, and traffic volume continues to swell. As a result, cruise lines are constantly on the lookout for ways to streamline embarkation and disembarkation.

In early April, Royal Caribbean announced it reached a partnership with IDEMIA to expand its use of MFace technology to increase disembarkation. The official rollout only happened after successful trials at Cape Liberty, New Jersey, and the Port of Miami.

The high-speed, 3D facial-capturing technology is expected to roll out in other Florida ports in coming months, according to Royal Caribbean’s technology blog.

The technology compares disembarking passengers with ticketed passengers who boarded the ship at the beginning of the cruise. No images are stored, but the cross-check against the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Traveler Verification Service helps keep the process secure and efficient.

Previously, passengers had to be manually cleared to disembark. This is still the way the process will function at most ports of call, but ports with the new technology will allow a quicker and easier process.

The upcoming ports have not been announced, but Royal Caribbean says the potential ports handle millions of travelers annually.
