Emirates, which introduced a tablet loan service to U.S.-bound first- and business-class passengers in response to the electronic devices ban on inbound flights, announced that, starting May 1, it will begin service cutbacks to five of the 12 cities it serves in the United States.
The reason? U.S. government actions, such as the electronic devices ban, that the Dubai-based carrier says had a direct impact on demand for air travel into the United States.
Starting May 1 and 23, respectively, flights to Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Orlando (MCO) will drop from daily service to five time a week. On June 1 and 2, respectively, service to Seattle (SEA) and Boston (BOS) will drop from twice-daily service to daily. And, starting July 1, flights to Los Angeles (LAX) will also drop from twice-daily service to a daily service.
Elsewhere, Spirit Airlines will end flights between Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport June 1, according to the Sun Sentinel. The reason: too much capacity; not enough travelers. Silver Airways and Frontier also announced plans to drop their Cuba routes and both American Airlines and JetBlue trimmed their Cuba schedules.
Delta Air Lines will add three daily flights between Chicago’s O’Hare International and Seattle June 19.
Alaska Airlines announced new routes between Dallas Love Field and four West Coast cities: Seattle, San Diego (SAN) and San Jose (SJC), Calif., and Portland (PDX), Ore. (see start dates/schedules here). The airline also inaugurated daily flights from Seattle to San Louis Obispo (SBP), Calif., and Wichita (ICT), and announced new daily service between Portland and Detroit (DTW) to start Aug. 30; between Los Angeles and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport Sept. 1; and between Portland and Detroit Metro Airport Nov. 6. (More information/schedules here.)
At the end of March, Norwegian began service twice-a-week service between Oakland (OAK), Calif., and Copenhagen (CPH), and announced it will add service to London’s Gatwick Airport from both Seattle and Denver (DEN) in September.
On March 30, JetBlue began service to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport with five daily flights between Atlanta and Boston (BOS).
On March 27, British Airways began flying between London Heathrow and New Orleans (MSY) four days a week, with a five-day-a-week schedule planned for the winter.
On April 6, Miami International Airport and WOW Air celebrated the launch of Miami–Reykjavík (KEF) service and on April 10 Austrian Airlines began its service between Vienna (VIE) and Los Angeles six days a week.
