The Ritz-Carlton, Bali currently offers an array of guest activities that are inspired by the local culture. The newest addition to the menu is a tradition of Hindu-Balinese origin. “Melukat” is a soul purification ritual that’s based on the belief that holy water is a physical agent of divine power. It’s believed that this holy water can cleanse one of spiritual impurities and offer protection from negative energies. The usage of holy water is a common theme in many Hindu-Balinese religious activities, but “Melukat” is particularly reserved for entering new chapters in one’s life, such as giving birth or getting married.

Karim Tayach, General Manager, has noted that “The Soul Purification Ritual allows our guests to take part in an important Balinese tradition and embark on a spiritual journey of self-discovery and enrichment, while continuing our commitment to fostering an authentic Balinese experience.”

The ritual is held on the resort’s private beaches during sunrise and early morning, in order to invoke the blessings of both the God of Sun and the God of the Ocean. The ritual includes an offering from a Balinese Priest; the cleansing of guests’ mouths, hands, feet and faces with holy water; prayer recitation; and the symbolic receiving of a bracelet called Benang Tridatu. Afterwards, guests are welcome to visit the nearby temples.
