Serious cyclers, take note: From Sept. 3–30, you can bike Spain, France and Italy, along the path once followed by Hannibal Barca, the Carthaginian general still regarded as one of history’s greatest military commanders. The 28-day Hannibal Expedition is offered by Ride and Seek, and was the brainchild of company founder Sam Wood, who worked on the BBC documentary production On Hannibal’s Trail. The Ride and Seek tour consists of two stages — Barcelona to Alba in 15 days, and Alba to Rome in 14 days. Cyclers set off from Barcelona and continue through Cataluña and the Pyrenees mountains into Ceret, where Picasso once dwelled, then turn north for climbs through Ventoux, Galibier, Alpe d’Huez, Agnel and Izoard. During stage two of the Ride and Seek tour, participants will journey through Italy’s Apennine landscape of vineyards, castles and picturesque hill towns. From Piedmont, the route takes in the Oltrepo Pavese into Emilia Romagna. Highlights in this region include plenty of great meals in the beloved culinary destinations of Reggio Emilia, Modena, Parma and Piacenza. Climbs in this section are also route features of the grueling Giro d’Italia race. The 28-day, 27-night trip covers 1,667 miles. Prices begin at €10,080 (approximately $14,509) per person. Opting for only stage one (908 miles) or stage two (758 miles) of the trip can also be arranged.
