New academic studies report bag fees improved passenger satisfaction since most carriers started introducing them in 2008, according to a new article from The Los Angeles Times.

Studies in 2013 and 2015 by business and engineering professors from the University of Maryland and the University of Italy report bag fees lead to passengers checking fewer bags, thereby reducing lost-baggage rates and decreasing flight delays by reducing the time it takes to load baggage onto planes.

One disadvantage of charging bag fees, according to the study, is passengers overstuffing their carry-on luggage to avoid paying for checked baggage and subsequently taking longer to jam those bags into the overhead bins.

However, the overall time to load and unload planes appears to be reduced by having passengers check fewer bags.

“Since there is less checked baggage, the turnaround time for aircraft can be reduced,” said Martin Dresner, one of the study’s authors and a professor at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland.

JetBlue Airways introduced baggage fees this month to lowest-fare passengers, leaving Southwest Airlines as the only major airline to offer free checked luggage.
