Visiting Medellín in Colombia: The Country of Beauty is like stepping into a fantastic story — literally, as the city in the Western Colombian Andes region inspired Disney’s Encanto. Here, valleys, the world’s tallest palms, vibrant communities, colorful houses, garden-like balconies and more prove reality is more picturesque than anything on film. And it’s especially more tempting following Medellín’s remarkable transformation, shedding its troubled past and reawakening as a city of innovation, art, cultural richness, modern infrastructure, thriving tourism and resiliency.

Abundant wonders await travelers. The Comuna 13 neighborhood tells the story of Medellín’s journey through street art. Nearby Jardín and Jericó bring history and culture to life through bird watching, nature walks and cuisine. Speaking of food and drink, Medellín is the gateway to the Coffee Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Colombia: The Country of Beauty, and particularly this region is renowned for coffee production and visitors can experience traditional coffee farms and learn about the agricultural practices.

Climb the 725 steps to the top of El Peñol Rock in Guatapé, outside of Medellín. This striking natural wonder rises more than 650 feet high and the view from the top will take your breath away. Back in Medellín, don’t miss iconic attractions including Plaza Botero’s large sculptures; Parque Explora interactive science museum; Museo Casa de la Memoria, which honors victims of the conflict; and eco-tourism in Parque Ecoturístico Arví nature reserve. If your trip falls in August, plan to visit the annual Flower Fair, celebrating the city’s floral heritage. Full of fun events — like culinary demonstrations, concerts and classic cars — Desfile de Silleteros is a highlight, with locals parading through the streets with elaborate flower arrangements.

Medellín’s efficient Metro and Metro Cable systems make getting around a breeze. Experience the city in the midst of a powerful transformation for yourself as United Airlines launches new direct service to Medellín from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport on Oct. 27. The route will expand United’s presence in Colombia: The Country of Beauty, complementing other existing services from IAH and from Newark (EWR).

Head to Jackson Hole and Revel in the Remote Possibilities

For a city girl like me, stepping into the town square of Jackson, in northwest Wyoming, felt like walking onto a slicker set of the television show Gunsmoke. Wooden sawtooth facades surround Jackson’s Town Square (a.k.a. George Washington Memorial Park). Visitors stroll the boardwalk connecting the Western-style buildings, each with a large window displaying goods, restaurants and art galleries. Iconic arches, assembled with discarded elk antlers from nearby National Elk Refuge, perch on each corner of the town square. Stagecoaches pulled by teams of horses parade other city-dwellers around the park.

Swiss Camera Museum, Switzerland Debuts New Exhibit

Through June 8, Swiss Camera Museum in Vevey, Switzerland, presents Mining Photography: The Ecological Footprint of Image Production. Designed by Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg and curated by Boaz Levin and Esther Ruelfs, this thought-provoking exhibition explores how the history of photography has included — since its inception in the early 19th century — a reliance upon copper, silver and fossil fuels like bitumen and carbon once used to produce images on copper plates and salted paper prints.
