An elevator that keeps track of who’s onboard? The QT Sydney’s elevators do exactly that, tailoring the music to suit the passengers. Within the inspired and creatively appointed physical setting of the historic Gowings and State theater buildings and its meld of Art Deco, Gothic and Italianate architecture, the high-tech elevators are being touted as “interactive installations” that add to the guest experience.
The premise is that a crowd can be mellowed with slow music, while a few guests can be energized with something more party-esque — with a bit of cheeky commentary thrown in. Riding solo? The elevator’s sensors will know, and respond with a soundtrack such as the Elvis Presley classic Are you Lonesome Tonight? Should a second person board at another floor, the elevator’s response is likely to be You’ve Got a Friend by James Taylor. Evenings and crowds trigger lively responses that can easily include the Prince favorite 1999.
The experience isn’t limited to the auditory: Passengers are also treated to displays of digital art by Daniel Boyd, whose work is an amalgamation of Pointillism, Impressionism and indigenous Aboriginal art.
