Qantas will use new tableware, inspired by the Dreamliner’s cabin interiors, on its Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
The tableware will be used in the airline’s first-, business- and premium-economy-class cabins as well as its airport lounges. The 16-piece set is crafted of fine bone china, with a five-piece stainless steel cutlery setting and glassware. The new set has been specifically designed for in-flight use, according to designer, David Caon.
Caon says he consulted the cabin crew and culinary team behind Qantas’s in-flight menus to determine the “functionality of tableware at 40,000 feet.” He hopes the new pieces will enable the crew to be “more creative when designing the in-flight menus.”
Functionality takes shape primarily with regard to the weight of the utensils. By reducing the weight of the cutlery and crockery sets by 11 percent, the airline can save up to 535,000 kilograms in fuel each year.
Caon also said the new tableware will “give cabin crew more opportunities to interact with customers as well as modernize the dining experience for travelers.”
The new sets will go into rotation Dec. 15, corresponding with Qantas’s inaugural Dreamliner service between Melbourne (MLB) and Los Angeles (LAX).
