Qantas To Improve Flights With Free WiFi

Sep 13, 2016
Daily

Qantas is installing a new WiFi system early next year to give passengers a chance to check emails and communicate on social media while flying — all for free. And that’s not all: The new system will come with added perks like the ability to rebook connections on delayed flights, reducing turbulence and even fewer medical diversions. The Australian airline will be one of the first to offer in-flight WiFi completely for free; many airlines now offer some limited connectivity free of charge, though it’s usually limited to streaming movies and television shows and does not offer the ability to check email. Apart from making its passengers happy, the new service will allow Qantas pilots the ability to get up-to-date weather information in flight, helping them avoid turbulence. Airline crews can also use the WiFi to conduct electronic heart scans for sick passengers and send data to medical centers on the ground. Theoretically, the ability to make a diagnosis on the plane will allow flight crew to make a more informed decision about rerouting a flight. What’s more, maintenance delays could be reduced as information can be assessed while a plane is in flight by streaming data to engineers on the ground. Qantas plans to outfit around 100 Boeing 737s and Airbus A330s with the technology starting in the beginning of 2017. There will also be a trial period on a single 737 before the end of this year. Now’s the Time to See Giza, the Nile and Beyond

All archaeology-obsessed eyes turned hopefully toward Egypt earlier this year when the highly anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum outside Cairo finally began welcoming visitors after construction delays, funding roadblocks and political upheaval in the region (among other factors) conspired to keep things delayed for many long years. The museum’s cherry on the top is slated to open this summer, with the July opening of the museum’s 20-plus-years-in-the-making Tutankhamen galleries and accompanying cache of some 5,000 artifacts and treasures from the boy king’s tomb.

On the Road

As I write this letter, I am halfway across the Atlantic Ocean on my return from an epic golf trip in Ireland. The weather was magnificent: sunshine and no rain ... quite unusual by Irish standards. We were happy to leave our rain gear and extra warm clothing in the hotel rooms as we headed out every day.
