Qantas started a waste reduction program with the goal of reducing the airline’s landfill trash by 75 percent by 2022. Qantas, with its subsidiary Jetstar, produces more than 30,000 tons of trash each year.

The company says it will reduce single-use plastic items by eliminating plastic cutlery, packaging and headrest covers, and use more biodegradable materials where possible. The airline says these categories will total 100 million items by the end of 2020, including 45 million plastic cups, 21 million coffee cups and 4 million headrest covers.

Qantas won’t be able to get rid of all single-use plastics, like wraps used for hygiene purposes, as they don’t have a practical alternative yet.

“Few industries can eradicate waste completely, but with this program we’re saying that avoidable waste should no longer be an acceptable by-product of how we do business,” said Qantas CEO Alan Joyce.

“This isn’t just the right thing to do, it is good for business and will put us ahead of legislative requirements in the various countries we operate in, where there is an end-date on various single use plastics.”

The airline also started a frequent-flyer initiative to increase voluntary carbon offsetting, giving 10 points for every dollar spent to offset travel from Australia. Passengers can opt to fly carbon neutral when they book, which Qantas says about 500,000 people already do each year.

The program gives money to tree-planting efforts in Australia and New Zealand.
