Prepare for Your Best Solar Eclipse

by Debra Bokur

Daily

It’s been a while since the sun went completely dark over the continental United States — the last total solar eclipse here occurred in 1918 — and after this summer’s event, it will be 2045 before it happens again. One of the best viewing locations in the country for the Aug. 21 total solar eclipse includes the towns of Blount County, Tenn.

To celebrate, these Blount County addresses are already making plans:

  • Historic Cable Mill in Cades Cove in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park will have an informal public event.
  • A Three Day Eclipse escape at Chilhowee Inn in Walland includes three nights’ accommodation at the inn, an eclipse day picnic and ISO CE certified glasses to safely view the event.
  • At Dancing Bear Lodge in Townsend, guests are welcome at the Total Solar Eclipse Party picnic on the lodge lawn, with lunch served “food truck style” on the deck. Guests will be treated to chairs, cozy blankets and eclipse glasses to see the sun go dark in style.
  • Also in Townsend, River Rat Tubing plans a Totally Tuber Solar Eclipse Celebration beginning in early afternoon, followed by live music and family activities at River Rat Tubing’s center.
  • In Maryville, Harmony Family Center will host the Great American Eclipse Viewing Party with food and brew trucks, and with local eclipse experts in attendance.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
