Portland, Ore.’s, renowned Japanese Garden reopened to visitors March 1 following a six-month closure for construction on the Garden’s Cultural Crossing expansion project.

The garden is technically still under construction until next spring, but visitors will be able to enjoy most areas now, including the 75-year-old blooming cherry tree and koi coming out of hibernation. Original garden spaces remain untouched by construction.

The $33.5-million project will add 3.4 acres to the 9.1-acre property, move the Garden’s entry gate to the bottom of the hill at SW Kingston Avenue, and create additional space for exhibitions, classrooms, cultural events and an expanded gift shop.

“The Cultural Crossing capital campaign will allow us room to improve the visitor experience and offer a comprehensive educational environment, as we help preserve the traditional Japanese garden arts,” said Steve Bloom, CEO, Japanese Garden.

Several new garden spaces including a moss garden and cascading water terrace are visible now, as well as a new courtyard outside the gates. The 53-year-old garden is considered one of the most authentic Japanese gardens outside of Japan and is one of the foremost Japanese cultural organizations in North America.
