Poland has no shortage of impressive museums with fabulous art exhibitions — but under-the-radar alternatives include a collection of decidedly quirky options.

Just an hour’s drive from Warsaw in Lowicz, you can lose yourself in a world of fasteners and clasps at the Museum of Buttons. What began as a suitcase full of random buttons has grown to a collection assembled by Jacek Rutkowski of more than 450,000 buttons of all colors, shapes, sizes and materials. The museum includes buttons that belonged to famous residents of the Czech Republic, such as tennis star Agnieszka Radwanska, author Witkacy and film actor Borys Szyc.

At the Museum of Unusual Bicycles in Gołąb, about an hour from Lublin, visitors can test their cycling skills (and balance) on the Reversed Bicycle, Space Bicycle and Pilot Training Bicycle. You’ll know when you’ve arrived at the Museum of Fire in Zory, as the building itself is shaped like a flame. Inside, visitors can pass through a wall of fire, use a virtual torch to see how various materials respond to flames and learn all about the history of fire dating from prehistoric times. Meanwhile in Kudowa Zdroj, frogs are the focus. The Frog Museum houses more than 3,000 exhibits dedicated to frogs. Drawn from nearly 20 countries, the museum also includes frog-related porcelain, soap boxes, figurines and other items. Once you’ve seen all there is to see, head outside: A nature park where you can watch frogs in their natural habitat surrounds the museum.
