Summer festivals are almost always a great way to spend a weekend — and if you throw in a zany theme, fun is sure to follow. Consider the 46^th Wizard of Oz-centered Oz-Stravaganza! happening June 2–4 in Chittenango, New York (you thought we were going to say Kansas, didn’t you?). The festival location is the birthplace of author L. Frank Baum, who penned the books on which the 1939 MGM film The Wizard of Oz was based. The Syracuse suburb boasts yellow brick road sidewalks leading visitors along Chittenango Creek to sites including All Things Oz Museum and Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum.

This year’s special guest is Betty Ann Ka‘ihilani Bruno, who played a Munchkin in the original 1939 MGM film. Events includes Friday night fireworks, a Saturday afternoon parade and evening shows with special guests. While you’re there, explore Baum’s Bazaar, the WILD Animal Park and Chittenango Falls State Park. Ruby slippers are optional, but always appropriate.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a believer, a skeptic or someone who’s decided a saucer must land in front of them before committing to an opinion, but the annual UFO Festival in Roswell, New Mexico, invites you to beam yourself to the desert. During this fun event, explore the topic in the town made famous for the alleged 1947 alien crash.

From June 30 to July 2, enjoy live music and performances, visit Roswell Museum & Planetarium and sit in on discussions and presentations with speakers at Roswell Daily Record’s Roswell Incident event at Roswell Convention Center. Presenters include television personalities Ben Hansen, Nick Pope and David Childress. Be sure to make time to visit local UFO-related attractions and to enjoy outdoor activities like the Alien Chase, Galaxy Fair, Roswell Invaders Baseball and the Golrak Experience at Spring River Zoo.

Speaking of unexplained things in the sky, The Mothman Festival in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, is dedicated to the mysterious Mothman sightings in the area. It all began here in 1966, when a huge winged, red-eyed visitor was spotted by multiple people. The annual festival takes place Sept. 16 and 17 on Main Street in downtown Point Pleasant.
