A large dose of glitz and glamour is set to arrive at the de Young Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco this March. From March 12–30, the worldwide premier of Oscar de la Renta: The Retrospective explores the legacy and enduring inspiration of one of fashion’s most loved designers. Curated by de la Renta’s friend André Leon Talley, who served as the American editor-at-large for Vogue magazine, the exhibition showcases more than 130 ensembles spanning a time period of five decades. Among the collection are rich garden motifs, day and evening wear, ball gowns and red carpet creations, along with selections reflecting cultural influences from Spain and Russia.

The exhibition’s timeline follows de la Renta’s career from its beginning in Spain to his training and apprenticeship at major houses including Cristobal Balenciaga, Antonio del Castillo and the French couture house of Balmain. De la Renta’s company contributed to the exhibition by opening its archival collection. Other items include pieces from private lenders, the museum’s costume collection and de la Renta’s personal collection. The exhibition is a collaboration between the museum, the house of de la Renta and the late designer’s family.
