It’s birthday time in Montréal as the city celebrates its 375th year with a terrific selection of events. One of the most anticipated is the new opera musical extravaganza Another Brick in The Wall: The Opera. Librettist Roger Waters — cofounder of the rock band Pink Floyd — collaborated with composer and Quebec native Julien Bilodeau to bring the opera, based on Pink Floyd’s iconic 1979 album The Wall — to life. Performance dates at the Quebec Opera house are March 11, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24.

Also part of the celebrations are 100 performances of Montréal AVUDO, created by the Compagnia Finzi Pasca. This presentation-performance is an artistic multimedia tribute to the St. Lawrence River and its indelible connection to the city and its history. Installations and projections will be on display May 17–Sept. 2, in the western area of Montréal’s Old Port, close to the Montréal Science Center café. Kicking off this series of free performances will be a grand illumination of the Jacques Cartier Bridge on May 17. The bridge, long a city landmark, spans the St. Lawrence River. More expressions of creative light are part of Cité Mémoire, taking place every evening at dusk throughout Old Montréal, with dream-like projections on trees, buildings and other surfaces telling tales of the city’s history. Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon in collaboration with Michel Marc Bouchard created the work, which can be viewed nightly until April 10.
