It was a busy summer, with vacations and business trips all around the globe and locally as well. I ended the summer with a trip to San Diego to attend the Global Business Travel Association convention and, more importantly, check in on one of my favorite courses in Southern California, The Grand Golf Club at The Grand Del Mar Resort. I took along executives from Asiana Airlines, Singapore Airlines and my good pal Vlad Velasco, formerly of Malaysia Airlines, for the challenge.
I also made a swift trip to Hong Kong to address the continued expansion plans we have for the brand — and to do a little early Christmas shopping at Rio Pearl in Kowloon and see my friends at CEZARI tailors. The folks at Rio Pearl are longtime friends whom I met through the Hong Kong Tourist Association some 25 years ago. When I walk in, it is like a family reunion. I have bought many fine gifts there. My wife has a beautiful pearl pendant in a heart-shaped setting and receives compliments whenever she wears it. Experts say their jade is also of fine quality. The shop is just a stone’s throw from the Shangri-La, and you have a valuable gift for a lifetime.
A longtime friend and colleague, Lori Lincoln, has taken over public relations for the Shangri-La brand. Lori and I worked together in New York when we were inventing the proper reporting of business travel. She was globetrotting like no other in those years and experienced all sorts of travel, from business to adventure to luxury. She is a true professional with deep knowledge of the business.
The Langham expanded its footprint in North America this summer, opening The Langham Chicago, with top hotelier Joe Aguilera at the helm. Stop in and check out the property; Joe will make you pleased you selected the brand.
I also have a trip to Dallas planned and may stop in for dinner at Chuck’s near DFW. It always seems to be hopping with people out having a good time. The original Chuck’s near Highland Park is also a great watering hole at one of Dallas’ best addresses.
With the fall in full swing, there will be more travels and golf — join the adventure!

Apr 17, 2024Mindfulness City in Kingdom of Bhutan Unveiled as Future Economic Hub
In front of an audience of 30,000 Kingdom of Bhutan residents and officials, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck presented his vision for a new economic hub in Bhutan. Located between India to the south and China to the north, Bhutan is one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Bhutan came late to global tourism. It opened its borders to international visitors in 1974 and, while tourism definitely increased, residents are enduring “light” rush-hour traffic in Thimphu, its capital city, as the only Asian capital without traffic lights.

Apr 17, 2024Amansara Review
It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
