Six years ago, noted chef Nobu Matsuhisa, actor Robert De Niro and Hollywood producer Meir Teper, principals of Nobu Hospitality, along with Miguel Singer and Nelly Zagdanski, principals of the New York- and Toronto-based real estate developer Madison Group, announced plans for a Nobu Toronto project, which will become the first integrated Nobu Residences, Nobu Hotel and Nobu Restaurant in the brand’s worldwide portfolio.
“It’s an exciting project, our partners are terrific businesspeople, and we look forward to working together on other projects in the future,” said Robert De Niro during the 2018 groundbreaking ceremony in Toronto. Six years later, the Nobu Toronto project is almost completed and expected to open in 2024.
The two 45-story towers, located in the center of Toronto’s Entertainment District, will be Nobu’s Canadian debut when it opens above the historic Pilkington Glass Factory, with residential towers housing 660 units of Nobu Residences, and an all-suite Nobu Toronto hotel located atop the west tower offering panoramic views of Lake Ontario and the city skyline.
The Nobu Toronto project has grabbed public attention in the city, with award-winning lead architect Stephen Teeple and his team working on the project’s hotel-restaurant-condo final design pieces before the two striking towers open.
The complex construction project included a façade restoration and partial reconstruction of the historic Pilkington Glass Factory that will still occupy the site. With parts of the Pilkington complex dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century, the Nobu project sheds light on the interesting history of this former industrial site. The base of Nobu Residences will retain the classic brick façade of the original Pilkington Glass Factory building, along with Art Deco elements from the 1919–1939 era.
The Nobu Hotel is designed as a 36-suite urban resort to feature a private hotel lounge; a wellness facility with state-of-the-art fitness equipment; and a 15,000-square-foot, two-level Nobu restaurant with a separate bar and lounge, two private dining rooms, a sushi bar and an outdoor terrace.
