PONANT collaborates with Smithsonian Journeys on a series of co-branded sailings in 2023, one of which will be timed to the total eclipse of the sun on April 20, 2023. On this 16-day sailing to eastern Indonesia, East Timor and the Kimberley region of Australia, travelers have the chance to witness one of only five total solar eclipses remaining worldwide this decade.
Setting sail from Bali, Smithsonian Journeys Experts, Associate Director of Science at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Alex Young and Australian-American historian Craig Benjamin guide guests throughout the journey, culminating in the phenomenal three-hour cosmic event.

With two days of swimming and snorkeling in Bali, travelers of this itinerary also have the opportunity to view Komodo dragons in Komodo National Park and explore the wonders of East Timor. The itinerary then brings guests to Wyndham in Western Australia before sailing back into the Timor Sea to position the ship Le Lapérouse perfectly for viewing the solar eclipse, set to take place from late morning to early afternoon on April 20, with an approximate period of totality lasting just more than one minute.
Following this event, the journey continues to the Kimberley region before concluding in Broome on the far north coast of Western Australia. Rates for this specific itinerary start at $20,480 per person.
