Located in Chicago’s Greektown neighborhood, the National Hellenic Museum (formerly the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center) unveiled its new exhibition, “Lives Afloat: The Greek Refugee Crisis through the Lens of Tasos Markou 2015–2017.”

Divided into three segments, corresponding to three separate years — Arrivals, Waiting and Borders — Markou’s photographs record the challenges of sea crossings, rigors of daily life in camps and the difficulties endured by those forced from their homes who later fled from escalating violence, persecution and war including the Syrian Civil War.

On view through spring 2019, public programs, docent-led tours and hosted speakers will supplement the exhibition. The exhibition team behind Lives Afloat used data and reports from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees and images captured by Markou, a native of Larisas, Greece, who spent time on the island of Lesvos to document the crisis.

The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m.

–5 p.m.; Thursday from 11 a.m.–8 p.m.; and closed Monday.

The museum’s mission is to “collect, preserve and portray the legacy of Greek history and culture in America,” and is home to an enormous assortment of recorded oral histories and artifacts related to Greek American history.

The Peninsula Bangkok Resort Review

Bangkok is one of the world’s most exciting cities, and we — me and my wife — have front-row seats. From the wood-paneled living room of our 16th-floor deluxe suite in The Peninsula, we look out on a panoramic sweep of the Chao Phraya River, one of the city’s most important routes. Day and night the river jostles with ferries, cruise boats, barges, speedboats and distinctive long-tail boats. We view it all in air-conditioned comfort.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
