According to a recent study by Agoda, the two countries see the fastest growth in European visitors. The study compared hotel bookings in destinations all over Asia in the last year. Myanmar and Japan tied for most hotel booking growth, with three destinations each receiving otherwise unmatched attention. Top destinations in Myanmar include Mawlamyine, which experienced a 90 per cent growth in hotel bookings; Hpa An, which experienced an 85 per cent growth in hotel bookings; and Hsipaw, which experienced a 64 per cent growth in hotel bookings. Top destinations in Japan include Wakayama, which experienced a 111 per cent growth in hotel bookings; Takayama, which experienced a 61 per cent growth in hotel bookings; and Nara, which experienced a 57 per cent growth in hotel bookings. The most popular destination outside the two countries was Siquijor Island, in the Philippines, which saw an increase of 135 per cent. “Some amazing destinations in Myanmar are slowly opening up thanks to improving infrastructure. The traditional tourist loop, which used to include just Yangon, Mandalay and Bagan, is expanding,” said Errol Cooke, vice president, partner services, Agoda.
