Montage Beverly Hills

Arrival/Check-In: I love a hotel entrance with a circular drive. It makes a routine arrival seem more like an event, and my arrival at Montage Beverly Hills was no exception. As my cab pulled to a stop at the entrance, the valet opened the door while a bellman retrieved my bag. I was inside the bright and stylish lobby within minutes and on the way to my room shortly thereafter.

Guest Quarters: My 625-square-foot junior suite with a small balcony overlooking Beverly Canon Gardens was bright and airy, done in tones of rose beige and cream. Folding French-style doors with sheer curtain panels separated the bedroom and sitting area. Bedside tables flanked the king-sized bed; a simple settee bench was at the end of the bed. There were two large flat-screen televisions, one in the bedroom and one in the sitting area. The sitting area featured an L-shaped sleeper sofa that pulled out to a queen-sized bed. The work/entertainment area on the opposite side of the room featured an expansive desk equipped with myriad electric outlets and wired for optimum connectivity. Control panels for lighting, temperature and the draperies were located in both the sitting area and the bedroom. The marble bathroom with a soaking tub, separate shower and dual vanity was stocked with plenty of bath amenities.

Services/Amenities: Service throughout my stay was top-notch. I especially enjoyed making use of the hotel’s chauffeur-driven Mercedes-Benz courtesy cars for transport to meetings and events while I was in Los Angeles. While I didn’t have an opportunity to indulge in a service at the hotel’s 20,000-square-foot spa or take a dip in the rooftop swimming pool, I did stop by the on-site Kim Vō salon for a pick-me-up hair-and-make-up session where I learned that some of the salon’s regular clients are business travelers who time their trips to coincide with their salon appointments. Some of my colleagues and I also enjoyed a delightful alfresco luncheon at Conservatory Grille.

The Experience: Although it’s smack-dab in the middle of the world-class shopping and dining meccas of Rodeo and Canon drives and (barring heavy traffic) only 30 minutes from Los Angeles International Airport, Montage Beverly Hills feels like a private oasis.

Head to Jackson Hole and Revel in the Remote Possibilities

For a city girl like me, stepping into the town square of Jackson, in northwest Wyoming, felt like walking onto a slicker set of the television show Gunsmoke. Wooden sawtooth facades surround Jackson’s Town Square (a.k.a. George Washington Memorial Park). Visitors stroll the boardwalk connecting the Western-style buildings, each with a large window displaying goods, restaurants and art galleries. Iconic arches, assembled with discarded elk antlers from nearby National Elk Refuge, perch on each corner of the town square. Stagecoaches pulled by teams of horses parade other city-dwellers around the park.

Swiss Camera Museum, Switzerland Debuts New Exhibit

Through June 8, Swiss Camera Museum in Vevey, Switzerland, presents Mining Photography: The Ecological Footprint of Image Production. Designed by Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg and curated by Boaz Levin and Esther Ruelfs, this thought-provoking exhibition explores how the history of photography has included — since its inception in the early 19th century — a reliance upon copper, silver and fossil fuels like bitumen and carbon once used to produce images on copper plates and salted paper prints.
