Following a similar announcement from InterContinental Hotels Group, Marriott International announced it aims to completely eliminate single-use toiletries by the end of 2020.
The announcement follows a similar pledge from IHG and Marriott’s own initiative that previously started rolling out. To date, Marriott has removed single-use toiletries in 1,000 properties globally.
The complete elimination is expected to prevent 500 million tiny bottles from ending up in landfills each year, which amounts to roughly 1.7 million pounds of plastic. The change represents about a 30 percent drop in plastic usage by hotel operators.
The tiny bottles will be replaced with larger, pump-operated bottles. According to Marriott, more than 20 percent of the company’s portfolio already uses the pump-topped bottles.
A larger pump-operated bottle contains as much product as about 10–12 standard mini bottles.
