Marriott International released its second annual U.S. Summer Travel Trends Report, collected by Ipsos Omnibus from more than 1 million Marriott.com searches and bookings, and from a digital survey of more than 2,000 individuals 18 and older.

Among the findings, more than half of consumers report taking their longest vacation of the year in the summer. The top five most booked destinations for getaways include Houston, New York City, Orlando, Seattle and Chicago. New Orleans, celebrating its tricentennial this year, was the most searched city for the Fourth of July.

Major cities, beaches and national parks are the top three reasons travelers will select certain destinations this summer. The five most booked cities include New York City, Chicago, Orlando, Atlanta and Seattle.

For international travel, people are looking to Toronto, Vancouver and Cancún, preferring to travel one continent away than on a far-flung journey.

Beyond where travelers are going, the survey also reported on summer travel trends. A few findings include U.S. consumers plan to take an average of two leisure trips this summer, while the beach, pool and restaurant are the top three favorite summer hotel amenities. Millennials are more likely to increase the number of leisure trips this year versus last.

When it comes to family travel, it is set to be more popular than ever this summer. More than 60 percent of families reported taking their longest vacation of the year in the summer. Children aged 6–12 have the heaviest involvement in selecting trip destinations.
