According to the World Tourism Organization, more than 53 percent of the world’s destinations are easing travel restrictions. The cautiously optimistic data was determined by analyzing tourism as of Sept. 1, finding 115 destinations significantly eased travel restrictions — an increase of 28 destinations since July 19.

Of the 115 destinations, two lifted all restrictions, while 113 still have some form of restrictive precautions.

“Coordinated leadership and enhanced cooperation between governments means tourism is slowly but steadily restarting in many parts of the world. Starting to ease restrictions on travel opens also the doors for tourism’s social and economic benefits to return. While we must remain vigilant and cautious, we are concerned about those destinations with ongoing full travel restrictions, especially where tourism is a lifeline and economic and social development are under threat,” said Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General, UNWTO.

The data also determines the destinations’ health and hygiene infrastructure, helping UNWTO outline the determining factors behind each destination’s ability to ease restrictions. Some findings revealed destinations with lessened travel restrictions have high levels of health and hygiene infrastructure in place, and low COVID-19 infection rates.

Another contributing factor, destinations with advanced economies (79 percent) or emerging economies (47 percent) were able to ease travel restrictions, while 64 percent of destinations easing travel restrictions have high or medium dependence on international air travel transportation.
