Majorelle Opens at The Lowell in March

Feb 22, 2017
News

The Lowell, a New York hotel of choice for world travelers, is unveiling a much-anticipated renovation adding a new restaurant, bar, lobby and club room. The hotel is celebrating the opening of Majorelle and the birthday of Jacques Majorelle, for whom the restaurant is named.

Charles Masson, the manager behind the restaurant, worked with hotel owners and general manager Heiko Kuenstle, architect Mark Pinney and designer Michael Smith to bring this vision to life. Masson created the kitchen, one of the few in New York with its own braisiere dedicated to preparing fine broths, sauces, soups and soufflés.

A few items from the menu include foie gras with warm apple delice; chicken roasted with thyme, potato mousseline; baby vegetables, tarragon, turmeric and laurel; and grilled shrimp on rosemary skewers with saffron rice.

Those dining at Majorelle will enter through Jacques, a welcoming bar with leather paneled walls, an antique mirrored ceiling and a marble bar. The bar provides the perfect setting for a private party or a quick lunch with expertly crafted cocktails, Mediterranean and Moroccan finger food and light fare offered throughout the day.

The restaurant, which will feature a beautiful garden with lush plantings, fountains and a fireplace, will connect to The Club Room. The lounge will have a curated collection of art books, a fireplace and a bar. The crown moldings, French Oak parquet flooring and hand-painted paneling resemble a private club in a busy city. The lounge, only open to the public after 4 p.m., will provide a private space for guests during the day before turning into a lounge until midnight.

What Maui Visitors Need to Know

There’s a lot happening on the beautiful island of Maui and recovery from the devastating fires in Lahaina is underway. Among happy events is a gorgeous cultural redesign of all the suites and villas at Fairmont Kea Lani, plus the opening of the resort’s Hale Kukuna — a 2,000-square-foot cultural center that focuses on sharing Hawai’ian culture, traditions and history, with the goal of a reciprocal sharing of ‘ike (knowledge) and mo’olelo (stories) that link the island’s storied past and vibrant present.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
