Early last week and in what is a constantly evolving situation, major U.S. airlines began announcing changes to protect passengers making new bookings for travel abroad. Late in the week, the airlines followed with renewed measures to help travelers get home during travel restrictions.

Delta Air Lines operated a full slate of flights Europe–United States through Sunday, March 15. The full slate gave Americans traveling in Europe the chance to catch a flight home before airlines begin cutting flights due to customer demand.

Starting Monday, Delta began operating reduced schedules pending passenger demand. The airline will reach out to customers whose flights have been canceled or changed in any way.

Delta makes travel to and from Europe more forgiving for passengers by capping fares to Europe through March 20. The airline is also waving change fares for travelers going to, from or through Europe through the end of May.

Meanwhile, American Airlines reduced its capacity for summer travel by 34 percent. April sees a 50 percent reduction in trans-Atlantic traffic. American operated flights from Europe for seven days following the imposed government restrictions and reduced flights to Latin America with a total suspension of flights to Argentina. There is no confirmed date for resumption of service, but the airline expects flights to resume in early May.

Similar to Delta, American Airlines waives change fees for airfare purchased before March 11 for travel to Europe through the end of May. For a full list of suspended flights, check the above link.

United was the first airline to offer flexibility for fee changes last week, and joins American and Delta in capping fares on certain flights.
