As over-tourism plagues hot-spot destinations across the globe, affecting local economies, transportation services, natural ecosystems and more, cities are taking steps to help reduce the effects, anticipating the onslaught of the summer season.
Cities across Europe such as Barcelona, Dubrovnik and Venice have seen protests from residents due to overcrowding and costly disruptions in daily life. The lack of tourism planning, regulation and investment by officials left many residents demanding accountability and action.
Dubrovnik announced it would limit the number of tourists that can enter its city center on a daily basis. Amsterdam, Paris and Rome are considering restricting coach buses in their city centers. Machu Picchu implemented a ticket reservation system last July, limiting the amount of people visiting during different parts of the day. Thailand will close popular attraction Maya Bay for four months annually (starting this June) to help the recovery of reefs and marine habitats. Barcelona is developing a system to track and issue short-term rental licenses to measure the impact of services like Airbnb in the city.
As destinations implement measures like these, and many others, to better regulate tourism around the world, they will continue to shift in response to residents’ concerns, environmental effects and economic influence.
