Q&A Time

Readers responded to our recent 2022 GT Tested Reader Survey awards. The awards recognize the top-ranked airlines, hotels and travel companies as voted by our readers. Following the announcement of our winners, two readers shared their thoughts:

Your recent article ranking hotels of interest in Global Traveler was a good read; my husband and I enjoyed it. We are frequent travelers and primarily enjoy 4- and 5-star hotels. I wonder if you might consider a trend we’ve noticed of late: hotels that allow dogs. It’s commonplace now, but we hear and read little about those who distinctly don’t enjoy vacationing with dogs and other pets. I should make clear I’m not talking about legitimate service animals, but pets.

I managed to find only one list showing hotels that do not allow dogs, and I would love to know how and why these hotel chains made the decision and whether it impacted them. We’ve stopped frequenting some of our favorite places, like the Broadmoor, specifically because the feel of the property has become a whole “doggie hotel” kind of thing. We’d love to know where we can count on not having to deal with dogs.

DORÉ MEYERS, VIA LETTER

In your review (GT Tested Reader Survey awards), the Best Airline in North America was Air Canada. However, two other North American airlines made the best in the world — Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. How?

MICHAEL SCHNARR, VIA EMAIL

In response to Michael Schnarr’s letter, FXExpress Publications, Inc. would like to clarify these are all separate questions with write-in reader voting. North American and international airline categories can be quite different and may not reflect the same set of readers/voters. – Editor

FAA System Outage: How Does This Happen?
In the Jan. 11 issue of eFlyer, we told readers about the nationwide FAA outage, which affected thousands of flights and many more travelers. We asked: Were you affected by this outage? One reader wrote in:

My wife and I had just visited her family for an extended holiday break in Atlanta. We had been there for about three weeks enjoying the city and were scheduled to leave Atlanta Jan. 11. Our flight was for early in the morning, as my wife and I like early flights so we don’t come home in the dark.

We saw no signs of any issues or outages when we arrived at Hartsfield, but after we went through security, we started noticing different airport workers congregating and discussing some matter of which we were unaware at the time. Our flight started to be pushed back later and later, but with no explanation.

We finally learned all flights experienced this because of an FAA outage. We ended up stuck in the airport for nearly three hours but, luckily, managed to get on a flight by late morning without much trouble. While this outage only slightly impacted our travels, I cannot imagine how much it must have altered other travelers’ plans.
