While the most famous London farmers market is Borough Market, you might find it too overrun with tourists. Instead, head not too far away to Maltby Street Market, a more local-friendly spot with lots of gourmet street food, coffee, fresh produce and pop-up bars. The Old Royal Naval College is a UNESCO World Heritage site, revered for its impressive and breathtaking architecture. The Painted Hall, seen above and completed 1707–1726, is one of the most stunning rooms in the building. See Britain’s largest painted ceiling up close with an elevated tour at 60 feet. Part-Art Deco masterpiece and part-Medieval royal palace, Eltham Palace was originally Edward II’s royal residence in the 14th century, serving this purpose through the 1500s. In 1933, Stephen Courtauld acquired the palace site and restored the Great Hall, but built an elaborate Art Deco home on the grounds as well. Tucked away within Holland Park, the Kyoto Garden is more than 50 acres of beautiful, authentic Japanese landscaping, a gift from Kyoto to London in the early 1990s. Another unique spot for shopping, Leadenhall Market was established in 1321 in what was central Roman London. The covered, picture-perfect promenades are lined with vendors selling fresh produce, cheeses, meats and flowers. A tranquil respite from the busy streets, St. Dunstan-in-the-East is a 12th-century church severely damaged in World War II. Now, the ruins are a public garden with well-tended vines and trees, but still with a hauntingly beautiful aura of abandonment. Once a street artist showcase hosted by Banksy, it now features graffiti art from just about anyone who wishes to show up with a can of paint.
