The Spanish coastal region known as Costa del Sol is a perennial favorite with beach lovers thanks to an estimated 325 annual days of sunshine, its array of beaches, outstanding local cuisine and excellent choices in accommodations. There’s no shortage of stunning scenery: In the Costa del Sol towns of Marbella and La Concha, views of the Mediterranean Sea are augmented by a backdrop of mountains.

Beach-goers can enjoy colorful beach waterside bars called chiringuitos, where cool, refreshing drinks accompany a menu of fried fish dishes, sardine skewers and seafood paella. Summer festivals, music and other events add to area charm. A host of water activities are available, ranging from jet-ski adventures and catamaran sailings to sport fishing, diving, snorkeling and pedal boats. Visitors can relax knowing 45 of the region’s beaches have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag designation. This international certification is given in recognition of high standards in water quality, environmental management and safety practices in alignment with demanding criteria established by the Foundation for Environmental Education.

The region’s coastline is also an inviting place to explore on foot, with numerous pedestrian and cycling paths. Cultural and marine-themed activities include visits to Cueva del Tesoro — the Treasure Cave, one of only three known submarine caves on the planet. Located near Málaga, this limestone cave contains human footprints dated to around 40,000 years ago, along with remains from the Paleolithic and Bronze Age, and samples of ancient art. It even comes with a legend: The caves are said to contain a hidden treasure that once belonged to five kings from the Almoravid dynasty.
