The distinctive work of artist and designer Koloman Moser is featured in a new retrospective opening today at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Moser was an Austrian known for his two- and three-dimensional multi-media creations that ran the gamut from metalwork and jewelry to furniture, prints, textiles, glass and ceramics. His work was characterized by the frequent use of strong geometric patterns and black and white grids, and was influenced by classic Greek and Roman designs.
Koloman became the co-founder, with Josef Hoffmann, of Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna’s Workshops) and one of the most well-known members of the Vienna Secession movement. His portfolio, Die Quelle (The Source) contained designs for wallpaper, fabric, print and textiles. Along with Gustav Klimt, he provided designs for the highly respected Austrian art journal Ver Sacrum. Koloman Moser: Designing Modern Vienna, 1897–1907, premiered in New York City at the Neue Galerie. View the collection in Houston through Jan. 12, 2014.
