Gate Delivery Arrives
Gate huggers rejoice! Two new app-powered services will someday make it possible to have food or merchandise sold anywhere inside an airport delivered to you wherever you’re seated in an airport — including by that coveted working power outlet by your gate. Airport Sherpa began offering gate delivery service at Baltimore Washington International Airport in July and AtYourGate is scheduled to begin operating at San Diego International Airport in August. Both programs offer add an in-airport delivery fee to their service, but many frequent travelers say the convenience will be worth it. (More details here.)
Cue the Croissants
A new 24-hour bakery at United Airlines’ Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport is turning out croissants, macarons, bagels, gourmet chocolates, doughnuts and a wide variety of pastries for the Mélange Bakery Café (by Gates 90–91) and for the 55 new restaurants, bars and food markets rolling out as part of the $120 million “re-imagining” of the terminal.
The bakery was developed in consultation with master pastry chef and chocolatier Jacques Torres (aka Mr. Chocolate) and has a staff of two executive pastry chefs and 27 round-the-clock bakers and chocolate makers. The 1,400-square-foot bakery may be the first 24-hour production bakery in an airport.
