A domestic Jet Airways flight carrying more than 150 passengers was forced to turn around and abort its flight after more than 30 passengers began to bleed from their ears and mouths amid pressure problems in the cabin.

According to a BBC report, Jet Airways flight 9W 697 was en route from Mumbai (BOM) to Jaipur (JAI) when it needed to unexpectedly turn around. Crewmembers forgot to flip a switch that pressurizes the cabin, aviation officials said.

The Boeing 737 carried 166 passengers and five crewmembers during the flight.

“The B737 aircraft, with 166 guests and 5 crew landed normally in Mumbai. All guests were deplaned safely and taken to the terminal. First aid was administered to [a] few guests who complained of ear pain, bleeding nose, etc,” Jet Airways said in a Twitter statement on Thursday. The airline regretted the inconvenience the loss of cabin pressure caused passengers, the statement said.

When passengers disembarked from the plane in Mumbai, those afflicted were treated, while new travel arrangements were made for the unharmed. As a result 144 passengers proceeded to Jaipur on a different Jet Airways flight, while 17 remained in Mumbai. The airline is also cooperating fully with authorities for an investigation into the incident.

On Twitter, users expressed disappointment and frustration with the airline. One man suggested the entire crew lose their license, while another urged fines on the airline.

According to India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation, the crew was de-rostered following the flight and pending an investigation.
