Jerusalem, Israel

Destinations / Middle East

Jerusalem is a destination unmatched in historical and religious significance. Considered the world’s holiest city, a visit to Jerusalem can be an emotional, spiritual event. However, even if you’re not visiting for religious reasons, you’ll find the experience enriching and memorable. From the Old City’s four quarters — Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Armenian — to the New City with its nightlife, museums and culinary scene, there’s always something to capture your attention.

GETTING THERE
Ben Gurion Airport is convenient to Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Israel is a small nation, and you can easily travel around the country from this starting point. Hadar Lod Taxis travel from Ben Gurion Airport to all destinations in Israel, 24 hours a day. You can order a taxi from the dispatchers in Terminals 1 and 3. Bus service is also available.

GETTING AROUND
For locations in central and Old Jerusalem, travelers can easily navigate by foot. Israel Railways operates many stations around the country, with ticket options ranging from one way to monthly. A one-way ticket for the route between Jerusalem and the attractions in Tel Aviv is about $6. For intercity travel, the Egged company provides bus service in Jerusalem. You can purchase various ticket packages on a Rav Kav Card, acquired at the Jerusalem Center Bus Station Sunday through Thursday, 7 a.m.–7 p.m., and 7 a.m.–noon on Fridays.

9–5
Noya
Situated near the Old City, Noya is a kosher restaurant offering Mediterranean and French cuisine from one of Jerusalem’s favorite chefs. Noya opens its doors at noon, serving a tantalizing lunch menu to tempt the business crowds. Options range from chicken risotto to baked and stuffed pullet, with lunch specials on dessert and wine.

Olive & Fish
Serving traditional Israeli kosher dishes in a slightly upscale atmosphere near many of the preferred hotels in Jerusalem, Olive & Fish proves a safe bet for a business luncheon in the city, offering a special business lunch menu from noon until 5 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. The beautifully plated dishes include a wide variety of seafood options, of course, as well as other entrées such as lamb kebabs, steak, poultry and salads.

Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem
If you need a venue for an all-day business meeting or event, the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem offers luxury meeting spaces in a convenient location. Choose from eight meeting rooms; coordinators work with you to provide all your meeting-related needs. The hotel accommodates meetings for as few as 12 or as many as 890.

AFTER 5
Church of the Holy Sepulchre
There are so many historic sites you’ll want to visit while in Jerusalem; luckily, many are open past business hours. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, said to be the site of Christ’s resurrection, is open every day until 8 p.m. in summer and 7 p.m. the remainder of the year. Visitors should dress modestly and respectfully.

The Israel Museum
The Israel Museum offers extended hours on Tuesdays, keeping its doors open until 9 p.m. World-renowned for its extensive collection of archaeological finds and historic art, you’ll find everything from the Dead Sea Scrolls to works by Pablo Picasso. Spanning more than 20 acres and home to more than 500,000 objects, the museum can keep you occupied for days.

The Western Wall
Located in Israel’s Old City, the Western Wall, more than 2,000 years old, is visited by millions annually, regardless of religion or faith. The Prayer Plaza is open 24 hours a day; as with many attractions in Jerusalem, modest dress is required. The underground tunnels are open for individual evening tours with a reservation, which can be made on the website.

Amansara Review

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
