“Can you hear me now?” If you’re directing that question to the Japanese government, the answer is a resounding “Yes.”
In response to a survey conducted by the Japan National Tourism Organization that revealed ease of Internet connectivity as a top priority among foreign visitors, the Japanese government is actively pursuing opportunities to establish a wider network of free WiFi hotspots. The push is twofold: to answer the call for increased Internet access and to give visitors easy access to online guides, train schedules and other tourism-related websites and apps.
To access free WiFi hotspots, show your passport at designated locations in airports and tourism information centers. In turn, you’ll receive a WiFi card with a log-in ID and password. Enter the log-in information at an access point with an NTT East WiFi signal and you’re registered for 14 days’ access to NTT East-supported WiFi hotspots. As of January 2013, there were 17,000 NTT East WiFi spots around Japan.
