Italy asked UNESCO to place its Neapolitan pizza on the cultural heritage list. The proposal was unanimously approved by Italy’s National Commission for UNESCO, and was submitted to UNESCO with an 850,000-signature petition from supporters around the world.
The review process will take a year and will involve all 193 UN member-states. The final decisions will be made in Paris next year, so Neapolitan pizza has a long way to go before the status of its approval will be known.
The UNESCO world heritage list contains mostly landmarks, but UNESCO started including items of “intangible cultural heritage” a few years ago. Italy is arguing this unique, thin-crust pizza made with very specific ingredients is an indelible part of Italian heritage and something that needs protection and preservation.
Neapolitan pizza must be made with a specific type of flour, and the crust has a specified thickness. Other intangible cultural heritage items on the list now include the Georgian tradition of Qvevri winemaking and Sicilian puppet theater.
