Indianapolis International Airport unveiled a massive mural of legendary entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker’s impact on the physical, social, cultural and economic legacy of the city.
Madam Walker was the first self-made Black female millionaire and an influential figure in Indianapolis. The mural, “Entrepreneurs Awakening: The Making of a Legacy,” is 11 feet high and more than 75 feet long. Indianapolis Airport Authority partnered with Arts Council of Indianapolis and Madam Walker Legacy Center to create the mural, selecting local artist Tasha Beckwith to craft the mural, designed digitally and printed on adhesive vinyl. Beckwith scattered Madam Walker’s own words throughout.
“This endeavor has been in the works for more than a year, and it took a diverse group of community partners and talented individuals to bring it to life,” said Mario Rodriguez, executive director, Indianapolis Airport Authority. “It is an incredible piece of artwork, worthy to represent the tremendous inspiration Madam Walker is to the history of American entrepreneurship and our great city.”
The mural is located pre-security in Civic Plaza inside the airport terminal, and will be on display into 2022.
