Iberia rolled out a new premium economy seat to be installed on 37 of long-haul aircraft starting in summer 2017. The new seat, with a width of 19 inches and seat pitch of 37 inches, is wider than the current economy seat.

The seat will also recline more than the current models, with a 40 percent increase over economy. And the seat will have a larger IFE screen, at 13 inches compared to nine in economy.

The new seat’s other features include adjustable head and foot rests, noise-canceling headphones and a special amenity kit reserved for passengers only in this section. Premium-economy passengers will also be allowed access to priority boarding and disembarkation, an extra suitcase allowance, upgraded dining options and other privileges.

Currently, Iberia has plans to retrofit eight Airbus A330-300s and 13 A340-600s. The carrier’s 16 new A350-900s will come with the new seats when they are delivered in 2018.

The routes with the new seat will be from Madrid (MAD) to Buenos Aires (EZE), Lima (LIM) and Chicago (ORD) next summer. Iberia claims to be the first airline to offer a premium-economy option on direct flights between Spain and Latin America.

“Premium Economy is an initiative included in our Plan de Futuro aimed at increasing revenues. It will give Economy passengers an additional option for greater comfort and extra services on long flights,” Luis Gallego, executive chairman, Iberia, said.
