One of Switzerland’s most scenic hiking paths is even more picturesque. The world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge opened last week in Randa, Switzerland, spanning 1,621 feet and rising as high as 279 feet.

Known as the Europabruecke, the bridge hangs more than 275 feet above the Grabengufer ravine and spans nearly one-third of a mile. The ravine sits at the foot of one of the highest mountains in Switzerland, the Dom, with an elevation of 15,000 feet.

The bridge is part of the Europaweg, a high-altitude hiking trail popular with tourists connecting the villages of Zematt and Graechen. The Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge is named for its chief sponsor, a psychologist and co-owner of a Swiss winery. The original bridge closed in 2010 due to unstable terrain forcing hikers to detour into the valley before climbing up to the reach the trail.

The completed bridge cuts travel time through the valley from three to four hours to just 10 minutes. Hikers can take in the stellar views of the Matterhorn, Weisshorn and Bernese Alps along the way.

While the bridge’s height removed the risk of rock fall, more height-averse hikers may want to plan ahead before the journey. People with a fear of heights have to close their eyes or should have someone to walk behind.
