The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is asking the public for help recovering media coverage of the Holocaust. While there is currently wide access to media coverage by major newspapers, there is not a large database of local media coverage. The crowdsourcing project is entitled History Unfolded: U.S. Newspapers and the Holocaust. Currently, more than 900 newspaper articles from the time period have been donated.

“The project’s goal is for contributors to explore Holocaust history as both an American story and a local story. We expect that some will be excited about using primary sources in historical research, but we also hope, through their involvement, people will challenge assumptions about what Americans knew about the events that came to be known as the Holocaust,” said Michael J. Abramowitz, director, Levine Institute for Holocaust Education.

Participants are asked to search not only local news articles from the time, but also op-eds, letters and cartoons on Nazism and specific events, such as the opening of the Dachau concentration camp in 1933 and the reports of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp in 1944. After finding pieces of interest, participants are asked to enter data about the piece online and upload an image of their findings. To participate, visit the website.
